Small type, named ‘Wm Wardell, AB, HMS Mullet, 10 June 1869’. Without ribbon buckle. RHS case 18433: At 12.20am on 10 June 1869, whilst stationed off Bermuda, 29 year old Robert Cleal, an Armourer of HMS Terror, fell overboard into the sea. Able Seaman William Wardell (24), of HMS Mullet, jumped overboard and held Cleal above the water until a lifebuoy was thrown to him. Brought unconscious aboard HMS Mullet, Cleal was successfully revived. Wardell was awarded the RHS bronze medal at the Society’s Committee Meeting of 21 December 1869 and the medal was sent to the Admiralty on 1 February 1870 for them to arrange its presentation.

Born on 24 June 1845 in Poplar, London, the son of William and Elizabeth Wardell, William David Wardell appears on the 1851 English census as living at Rhodenall Road, Limehouse, with his parents and younger brother and sister. He entered the Royal Navy on 10 January 1860 as a Boy 2nd Class aboard HMS Fisgard and opted for 10 years Continuous Service on 27 June 1863. The 1871 English census lists him as an Able Seaman, single, age 26, and serving at Minster, in Kent. With RHS and RN service details. GVF. £175.
