The Royal Humane Society | Large type, named 'George Dallard...12 Oct 1865' for a rescue in Sussex. GVF, £275
Large type, named 'George Dallard...12 Oct 1865'. With ring suspension, original ribbon and silver top ribbon buckle, as well as case of issue. RHS case no 17582: On 12 October 1865 postman James Shirley was bathing in Bopeep Bay when he got into difficulties and sank. George Dallard, who was at the time staying or working at the Victoria Hotel, St Leonards-on-Sea, near Hastings, Sussex, swam to the exhausted man and assisted him in getting safely ashore. Brought home to recover, Shirley was given stimulants to revive him. The rescue was brought to the attention of the RHS by J Hooker, of the Victoria Hotel, and the Society approved the award of its bronze medal to Dallard at its committee meeting of 18 October 1865. They were able to send Dallard's medal out for presentation on 20 November 1865.
It appears that George Dallard was born in about 1832 in Longdon, Worcestershire. He married Caroline Charlotte Ross (c. 1850-1906) in about 1873 and together they had at least three children (Caroline E, George Frederick R, and Frederick C Dallard). They appear on the 1881 census living at Farnborough, where George Dallard was the publican of the New Inn. By 1911 Dallard was widowed and living with his spinster sister, Eliza (70), at Braintree, Essex. George Dallard died in Braintree in 1914. With RHS and census details, etc. GVF, £275.
