The Royal Humane Society | Small type, to 'Clifton P Derrick 3rd Apl 1915', for a rescue in Dover, Kent, in EF condition, £180.
 RHS bronze medal to ‘CLIFTON P. DERRICK 3RD APL 1915’, in EF condition, without ribbon buckle. RHS case no: 41500: At 9.45pm on 3 April 1915, John McCarthy (28) fell into the Wellington Dock, Dover, when he was drunk. He was near the dock wall, where the water was 9 feet deep. Clifton Derrick (34), Chief Steward on the HMS City of Belfast, jumped in and caught him, but as they were being pulled up the line broke four times, letting them back into the dock 12 feet below the quay. They were eventually got into a boat and brought ashore. The case was sent to the RHS by the Admiralty. They considered it at their committee meeting on 11 May 1915 and approved the award of their bronze medal to Derrick, this being sent to the Admiralty on 3 June 1915 for them to arrange its presentation.
Clifton Percival R Derrick: Born in St Vincent, West Indies, in about 1879-81, Derrick appears on the 1901 census as a Boy, age 22, aboard the Savan, which vessel was at that time in the South Dock, Rotherhithe, London. In 1908 he married Florence Maud Kenham (1884-) (West Ham Register District, Oct-Dec 1908, vol. 4a, p. 129). Clifton Derrick died, age 42, in 1923 (West Derby Register District, July-Sept 1923, vol 8b, p. 340). Sold with RHS casebook details. EF, £180 [RESERVED]
